2.2 Interpret Research

In this post I am going to explain on how I am going to produce my Final major project.

Collation of research.

With the factors I have worked on with my previous project.  I shall discuss all the 4 interests connected to my project.

  • Task 1

Film and TV.

  • Explain

The project focuses on a night in a life of a private investigator who receives a bizarre phone call one night asking him to meet the person at a location 5 minutes away from his flat. The rest is the main character getting ready to leave to meet the person but through voice over we find out who this character is and why does he inhabits  such a messy flat and how he got the job as a detective. It will be  in Black and White and will be highly influenced  from the films made back in the 40’s 50’s 60’s and even the 70’s. It is a neo noir shot in colour and edited in black and white.

The Research /Evidence.

The research i did for trying to make this project was simply by watching as many film noir’s as possible. I observed scenes and styles and moods of this pictures and was taking notes on how the characters work and the world of noir. I watched Documentaries and interviews concerning noir.

German expressionism and the influence of Film Noir.

The classical Film Noir era in Hollywood lasted from the 1940s to the late 1950s. There is no doubt as to Film Noir’s importance and impact in the history of the film, not only Hollywood style but also in European style cinema. But like any subject in history, Film Noir also has a beginning. Here, we will look at films, both foreign and domestic, that paved the way for Film Noir’s style in the decades leading up to World War II.

Many of Film Noir’s distinct styles, including black and white picture with low-key lighting elements, find their roots in the German Expressionism movement. German Expressionism began to grow in the years before World War I. After the Great War, Germany was isolated from the rest of the world. Foreign films were banned in Germany, increasing the demand for more domestic films. Due to this isolation, German Expressionism peaked in the early 1920s and became widely acknowledged in the international film industry.

German Expressionism in cinematography was born out of the larger Expressionist movement that had existed in the first decades of the 20th century throughout Germany and Austria. The Expressionist movement is known for its birth of a “renaissance in the graphic arts.” Many artists living in Germany during this time began to focus their craft on graphic art, most taking up printmaking. In their art, Expressionists sought to assert their feelings of “dissatisfaction with the existing order, and [their] desire to effect revolutionary change.” Expressionist used the visual arts to create a look into the emotional and psychological state of being by use of distorted images and irregular shapes. They sought to bring the human subconscious to view without the use of literal symbols, sparking an emotional reaction to their art.

Arguably the most crucial filmmaker influenced by German Expressionism was Alfred Hitchcock. He worked on a film in Germany known as The Blackguard (Cutts 1925). Whilst there, he became fascinated byThe Last Laugh as well as Destiny (Lang 1921).After Murnau but before Lang immigrated to the United States, Hitchcock had already used their valuable techniques of German Expressionism as an inspiration for him to direct a silent film called The Lodger (Hitchcock 1927). In this film, he had employed the use of shadow and light. He progressively used this in his black and white films, such as I Confess (Hitchcock 1953), The Wrong Man (Hitchcock 1957) and Psycho (Hitchcock 1960). Yet in terms of performance and theme representation, he used this in his coloured featuresThe Birds (Hitchcock 1963) and Marnie (Hitchcock 1964). Considering this and the impact he gradually had on horror/thriller genre, Alfred Hitchcock could arguably be an equally influential figure from German Expressionism as Murnau and Lang.

Early American Horror had already begun through German Expressionism but another influential development was film-noir, a style of ‘black films’ which occurred throughout the 1940s and 1950s. It was introduced through similar methods as German Expressionism. Film-noir had already started during World War II but it was not until after it concluded and the Cold War began that it became a wider inspiration. According to French critics, the style and themes within many American crime and detective films during the war were ‘dark’, downbeat and black (Dirks, 2012). Nevertheless, these pessimistic emotions at the time influenced filmmakers to take advantage and present them on the screen.

Reflective writing on task 1:

In the first of task of this blog i was researching through multiple sites concerning the origins of noir and it’s key themes to produce evidence.

– Task 2

  • Personal experiences that influenced my choices.

Film Noir is my favourite film genre because of the characters it implies , the dialogue , the atmosphere within the world of noir , the women portrayed as dangerous yet beautiful beings, the explosion of tragedy and unexpected evil that can show up at any moment.

This project slowly developed through researching 2.1 my interest was to gather my 4 major interests , write down a scenario that resembles one of those interests and ask questions to people thus with their reactions I can create characters through a script. The reason why I decided to take this route was because I was influenced by the films of John Cassavetes, a film director not to focused on plot but on character development and how they feel, he uses improve as an artistic form and manages to convey great performances from them, including the likes of Ben Gazzara, Gena Rowlands, Peter Falk and Seymour Cassel.

A Woman Under the Influence 4minmos4

S.Y.Yang, L. (2016) John Cassavetes: Five Films, The Criterion Collection. Available at: https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/558-john-cassavetes-five-films (Accessed: 22 June 2016).

With that influence I asked questions to these people I interviewed and see how they would react to them. At first I was thinking of a far more ambitious idea which genre was a noir but since I have already worked on a noir with a short clip for Canterbury college called Hallo. So I digressed my ambition for this project and with a few idealistic notes learnt from tutor’s I gained an idea on these characters and eventually transformed into an idea concerning the first five minutes of a noir primarily focused on a black comedy character driven drama.

  • What is it that makes me do my project

My  love of film. And because I want to become a film director and because I want to experiment more so with movie cameras and because I want to develop my editing, I want to know how to use sound techniques in movies , I want learn visual aesthetics, I want to write scripts and see how actors could deliver a performance through the lines I wrote, I want to know how to organise in making a film, I also want to learn how to produce films, I want to see how I can figure out shooting locations. All my interests in cinema is the reason why I want to make this project , for Canterbury college and because of my love of film in general.

  • What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audience

What I seek to achieve is to create a miniscule slice of thrilling entertainment without pulling any punches. The way this project shall relate to it’s target audience is because of the main character in the project, hopefully I will be able to create a mesmerising atmosphere all related to the rules of noir. An audience who like private detectives and puzzling stories is what  I want to make this project for the story will be the opening sequence of an unmade movie. All in the style of noir.

  • Basic premise of the project

A private detective receives a mysterious phone call one night asking him to meet a rendez vous point near his own flat. And so he prepares himself to meet the person who called him.

  • Awareness of it’s target audience

What my Final Major Project will try and provide is a simple sense of thrill without going to far out of edge, It won’t play in an unconventional standard, instead it would be more of a quickly paced short film while keeping the audience intrigued on how the clip will end.

-What are similar media products and how does your work relate to them ?

The similar media products of which this project has it share influences from is the genre of Noir, The characters inside noir and the dialogue and film influence with it’s genre being noir and neo noir. The main character is a Private eye who has a drinking problem and a problematic past this character can be related to characters like Jack Nicholson’s character in Chinatown or Downey Jr’s character in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and even William Holden in Sunset Boulevard.

How have similar media products influenced your project

Neo noir is highly influenced by Film Noir , my project is influenced by Neo noir and film noir. The characters and it’s themes within the genre have highly helped me gained influenced to make this project.

What can you learn from similar media products

What I learnt from similar media products is that I have read and watch thousands of noir’s including documentaries talking about noir and trying to understand how the world of Noir works.

Reflective writing on task 2

In this task i was quite simply writing my interests and why noir is a huge interest of mine.

  • Task 3

Similar media products and how i can relate to them.

The similarities connected to my project come from films, comic books, novels and video games like.

The Long Goodbye ( The main character’s persona is similar to mine)

Inherent Vice ( The main character has similar aspects to mine)

The Big Lebowski ( The main character has similar aspaects to mine)

After Hours ( The atmosphere and environment has a similar tone to mine)

Touch of Evil ( The atmoshere and environment has a similar tone to mine)

Sin City 1&2 (Characters, script and atmosphere)

The Chaser ( Character and setting)

Sweet Smell of Success ( Environment)

Angel Heart ( Protagnist)

The Killing of a chinese bookie ( Protagonist and gritty atmosphere)

Drive ( atmosphere)

Double Indemnity ( Script, characters and atmosphere)

Gilda ( Atmosphere,script and atmosphere)

The Long Weekend ( Character)

Taxi Driver ( Atmosphere)

Johnny Handsome ( Atmosphere)

Detour ( script, atmosphere and characters

Sunset Boulevard ( script, atmosphere and characters)

La notte ( atmosphere and characters)

Le Samourai ( atmosphere and characters)

  • Video Games

The Wolf Among us ( Characters, script and atmosphere)

L.A. Noire ( Characters,script and atmosphere)

Killer 7 ( Characters)

Max Payne 1,2 and 3 ( Characters, atmosphere and script)

  • Comic Books

100 Bullets ( characters, atmopshere and script)

  • Novels

The black Dahlia / James Elroy ( Characters, atmopshere and script)

Red Harvest/ Dashiell Hammett (Characters, atmopshere and script)

The Killer Inside Me/ Jim Thompson ( characters and script)

The Golden Gizmo/ Jim Thompson (characters and dialogue)

  • The Influences of media products for my project.

All the movies that have cited up above have influenced my project in a strong by how they have been written acted and developped into the style that it had.

The Black and White style in Noir and how it is different other gnere movies in black and white because with Noir (back in the 40’s) Studios would shoot most movies in daylight or in a studio. With Noir the production crew would shoot it in actual night to capture a darker more sinister enviroment for the themes of the movie they were trying to make.

How Joseph Gordon Levitt keeps it always cool in Sin City 2 yet having a huge issue of his own ,or whether Doc Sportello from Inherent Vice was puzzling a case impossible to follow, or whether Jake Gittes from Chinatown falls for Evelyn Mulway. All these cool factors is what influences the character in my project.

  • What can i learn from similar media products

By understanding the world of noir i can learn the methods of voice over used in noir with description over people and the world they inhabit. I can learn how to create an atmosphere that the noir creates, i can learn how to use the right kind of music played primarily in noir and i can learn what kind of tools and design spotted in the world of noir by watching movies and reading stories concerning crime/mysteries and even romances. And I can learn how to use camera work with detail by borrowing certain scenes from other movies and see how that could affect my project.

The comparison with my project and other media products.

The main character of my project is a balance between Philip Marlowe from the Long Goodbye and Max Payne.

The location in which it’s set in is small flat that is similar to the flat from the murder sequence in Touch of Evil.

The Voice over work comes from films like Sin City, Double Indemnity, Detour and The Lady from Shanghai.

The Script that i will write for the project is primarily voice over work in which the main character is talking in VO while getting dressed and ready. I wanted a cynical and sarcastic driven script that is an influence of other noir with male protagonist always self condescending and point out thing with funny one liners.

Reflective writing for task 3

In this task  wanted to make sure that i wrote as much films of influence for this project as possible. Which is why i made a list and write down mini examples of why the films have it’s similar aspects for the project.

  • Task 4

Content research

The project will be shot in an apartment, and late at night, to add the right convenient atmosphere for the project. Jazz music is strong key to this project. Because Jazz elevates more the mood and style of noir. Cigarettes and Alcohol will also be included since one of the noir elements involves those factors to convey authenticity.

Production research.

Noir revolves primarily in city streets. My plan is to shoot in the location of Canterbury , right next door to Canterbury College at night since most of the themes of noir centers at night , so it is highly important the shooting is shot at night.

My experimental Noir short film will consist of only 2 crew members. Myself and Jack Stevens. I shall direct and star in the project as there is only 1 character in this clip and Jack Stevens will be the cameraman. There will only be 2 people who will make this project.

Target Audience.

My FMP shall be for an audience who love crime thrillers, Film noir and witty dialogue.

Other material.

My FMP consists of black and white colour, it is not set in the 40’s but is set in modern day thus being a neo noir instead of an actual film noir. The props will have a bottle of vodka ( as our character  has a drinking problem) cigarettes ( a tool and prop always found in Noir). Clothes is another important part since the character is a private detective he has to match a balance between cool yet scruffy. So the character will wear a business suit without a tie and a ripped hole in his black trousers. The other important factor is that the location of the FMP is set in a flat that look as messy as possible to explain the audience that this character isn’t highly organised and that he is drawn into drinking which is why there will be empty bottles in the scenes.

Reflective writing on task 4 :

In this task i wanted to go straight to the point of talking about my project and to make sue that i am explaining correctly of what i want to make.

2.2 Interpret Research

2.1 Research

  • Day 1 / April 13th 2016

On our first day back to Canterbury College

  • Research plan

For my FMP I will work on my four primary interests to develop an idea for my FMP. I will work on my favourite film genres and then make a short clip out of one of them. I will then draw storyboards and write a script whilst choosing a location to shoot and then film with a canon 700d and using a microphone. My project will consist of my favourite film genre making a wallpaper of who I am consisting of my favourite things and things that I despise. Then I will interview other people to find out what their favourite film is. Since my favourite passion is film I will ask questions concerning film and what is there favourite genre and then I will ask them questions if they were in there favourite movie and what would they do if they did. Then I will write a script and a story synopsis by figuring out what genre I would pick to make the clip and then understand the requirements. I will compare other movies and take influence of films that my project will be inspired from.

Week 1

  • Who am I

We were task to build a mood board containing images representing all the things we hate and love. What styles I like and dislkie , my interests my goals Family, friends etc..

We were also tasked to create a mind map of what are our main interests and goals.

My Likes :                     My Dislikes :

Movies                            Narrow minded people

Video Games                 Extreme Conventionability

Women                           One Dimensional people

Art                                   Rats

Comic books                Being tired

Italian food                   Cloudy Weather

Travelling                      Sudden change of rules if the reason is not good enough.

My 4 interests

  • Film

– Primary

I have loved film ever since I was 6 year old, it was back then when I realised I wanted to be a filmmaker . I watch films nearly every single day and Take major influence. My favourite film genres are Drama, Thriller, Science-Fiction, Comedy, Action, Western, Romance, Musicals, Adventure, Subgenres, Gangster films, Film Noir, Horror, Fantasy and War films. I take strong interests into filmmakers and their filmography’s. My favorite filmmakers include Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Danny Boyle, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, William Friedkin, Wong Kar-Wai, David Fincher and Park Chan-Wook.

One of my particular favourite genres is film noir the film medium as it deals with a particular sense of style that I like.

It always focuses in an urban environment where the mood is dark and jazzy and the males have no future and the females have a past. It’s a style as cool as it is romantic fuelled with self extreme cynicism.  My favorite films in the Noir genre which includes Neo Noir ( new film noir as the last great film noir was Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil back in 1958.) are Touch of evil, Inherent Vice, Chinatown , The long goodbye,  The lady and Shanghai, Gilda, Kiss me Deadly, Sin City, Angel Heart and finally Blade Runner

But Blade Runner is a Science- Fiction if it had to be one particular genre. Blade Runner consists of Science fiction blending in with Noir also known as Tech Noir , the future , Technology as our own source of expertise . This particular style is called Cyberpunk, a sub-genre in which the future is atmospheric yet superficial.

I also love films that play into the unconventional route because i believe that stories and styles need to be different from one another, we need to see something new everytime. It’s good to see something on the big screen that we have never before because it brings more creativity into our minds which is one of the reasons why I get drawn into bizarre and art house independant films .Because the great director Federico Fellini once declared that eventually , many movies will start repeating itself and he was right especially in this day and age of remakes and superhero blockbusters.

Fellini said :

Money is everywhere but so is poetry. What we lack are the poets.
Federico Fellini (1963)brainyquote.com Available at. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/f/federico_fellini.html
I also tend to watch as many movies at the cinema as possible and I write reviews on facebooks within albums with it’s years. I started this new routine back in 2015.  The latest film i saw Batman vs Superman which was better than i thought it would be.
I also love movies in which the characters i can relate too, which is why i really like the films of Chinese auteur Wong Kar Wai.  His characters and the neon world of hong kong with the dazzling cinematography of Christopher Doyle make his films relatably fullfilling.

I have a strong interest in personalities over people , Because I like to see human emotions into stories that affects them due to what is going on around and how this impacts them. Like the films of John Cassavetes, a director focused more on character studies instead of conveying a plot.

Youtube.com. (2016). YouTube. [online] Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTLedTEs4IY [Accessed 23 Jun. 2016].

I love all sorts of genres. I tend to get drawn into gangster films , Horror films , Film Noir and Science Fiction.  but I love stories with a genre hard to pick since it is about almost every kind of genre. Like David Fincher’s Fight Club or even Forrest Gump.

– Secondary

I shall interview people to figure out, to ask about their movies and genres and to know what sort of film they feel can personally relate too.  This helps me to find a final project in which genre i can choose then ( through the responses of other people) i can mix up there favorite feelings and make a story with the genre i chose. I shall ask questions to do with situations like the characters that you usually find in Film Noir.

Task 2

Interview for film

I decided to interview one of my fellow colleagues, Manuel Fernandez and ask questions concerning film.

  • Video games

– Primary

Video Games have a similar artistic aspect like in movies which Is what I like about them. Most people tend to love video games due to gameplay. What attracts me the most about them is that is the premise or the arc of the video game is on my opinion good that is what draws me in, the second being of course good gameplay.

Some of my favourite video games include :

  • Secondary

Like Movies I plan to interview people who are in situations like in the story of video games ,  most of the time video games  deals with action oriented scenario.

Interview concerning video games

The person that I am going to interview dislikes being recorded but I wrote everything down.

  • 3rd interest is Travelling.

I enjoy taking walks and heading individually to different locations often to watch a movie or just for the sake of discovery. I like that sense of adventure which I find in exploring places. I like a lot of Asian culture due to it’s unique sense of style and which to one day head to a Tokyo, Bangkok, Shanghai, Moscow and Seoul.

I believe there is so much to see in the world. And to discover different shapes and forms of things so I can grab ideas because there are so many stories to find in the world . I love landscapes including jungles because of it’s tropical atmosphere especially waterfalls. I tend to love neon and cities glowing at night that brings a dreamy magical livelyness to it all. I love when the sun rises in the morning across fields or other different environments and i believe it is good to be open minded instead of being narrow minded which i despise. I like atmospheres of different environments like in the different kinds of cultures and attitudes and accents and languages in diffrent locations that seem so different from one another.

Secondary research :

With my Final major project connected with travelling i plan to interview another student in Canterbury college and ask him questions concerning travelling.

  • 4th interest is Women

I have immense respect over women, i also have a key interest into people’s way of thinking. Women seem to have multiple different personalities like men but have a more vulnerable aspect about them. The kind of women i get drawn into are the quiet mysterious yet highly attractive types or the very enthusiastic joie de vivre type.

With my final major project my connection is to find a strong female character but one who is vulnerable and quiet. Yet open minded, naive and smart ( and gorgeous ). But the kind of female character i am looking for resembles like these leads from these movies.

Secondary :

I shall interview a person inside Canterbury College concerning perspectives over women.

All these 4 interests will have a connection with my final major project. Because as i was researching on what i wanted to do through the interviews i realised through watching recent authenitc films dealing with human character studies like High Rise or John Cassavetes films and even Tarantino’s Hateful Eight. It focuses primarily on human behavior and what humans are capable of doing to each other, they can turn into savages and transform a nation into human depravity like the Holocaust in the early 40s. But they can be saviors and try to do the right thing in life. But what is it that makes humans go to extents like this who can be trusted and who cannot.Who is more vulnerable than the other , Why 3 men can or can’t get along, how were they raised and those parents human behaviour. Filmmakers believe in different motifs, Lars Von Trier ( Director of Dogville and Antichrist) believes that all men are sexual predators and Women are hopeless. Some believe opposite.

So with my 4 interest i plan to question 4 different kinds of people and ask them there point of view over the questions i shall ask in which revolves a situation resembling one of my interests. Then by having their thoughts over these things i shall create these characters and make a story involving a whodunnit murder mystery like the game Cluedo revolving 4 people and not one trustworthy.  It was through these interviews that i began to gather the idea.

Reflective writing on task :

In this task I was focusing on how to catch an idea while working on my four favorite interest and by doing so this managed to help me develop one.

2.1 Research

1.1 Understanding Requirements

In this post I will talk about what I shall use in my project and what tools I will need and what kind of style it will have.

  • Task 1

  • The Idea

My idea for this project will be an experimental film noir art house clip

The premise of this project focuses on the first five minutes of an unmade movie. A Scruffy private eye who sleeps by day and works by night is awakened by a phone call. Telling him he must go to his work office and that there is someone to see him. The rest of the clip is getting himself together but we hear through first person voice over narration of who this character is and where he works and the women he used to love. The film ends when he leaves his flat.

Style and genre.

This project will be shot in Colour and edited in Black and white. But like with Spielberg’s Schindler’s list or the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, there will be glimpses of colour. It will have this 1940’s quality feel despite being set in a modern day world. Most of the dialogue is first person VO narration in the vain of self loathing, pessismism and sarcasm as most film noir protagonist always do. It shall also feature a jazzy smooth soundtrack. The influences of the project come from movies, books , comic books and video games all in which consist of the style of Noir.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice (2015) is a strong influence as it concerns a pot smoking private investigator solving an impossible mystery. The opening sequence is similar to the one that i would like to provide. It does not have first person narration but features the themes of neo noir.

The video game Max Payne 3 also has many film noir influences and it’s lead character is a very contemptfull cop who most gunblaze his way to solve mysteries and crime rings. It’s dialogue and voice over is one of the main sources of inspiration for the lead character in my project.

House, D. (2016). Max Payne 3 (Video Game 2012). [online] IMDb. Available at: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1407064/quotes [Accessed 23 Jun. 2016].

Examples of the voice over narration used in Max Payne and other noir films that i would like to provide :

Max Payne :[entering nightclub] This kind of place made me want to puke. I needed a real drink to cope with the electronic music and robotic people. ( from Max Payne 3 )

Philip Marlowe : I caught the blackjack right behind my ear. A black pool opened up at my feet. I dived in. It had no bottom.”( from Murder, my sweet )

Frank McCloud ( Humphrey Bogart): When your head says one thing and your whole life says another, your head always loses.”( from Key Largo 1948)

Millo Garret. Funny thing, my brain got locked on those two words: Be numb. Be numb. Be numb. Like some guru mantra, or a goddamn irregular heartbeat. Be numb. Be numb. Be numb. Good advice. ( from 100 bullets).

Bigby Wolf. Down. Seems like the direction this whole night’s been headed. ( from Wolf Among us).

The project in which it’s style it borrows isn’t wholly realistic as it is a 40’s 50’s look and I plan to use this style in an over the top fashion by changing the mood, feeling and atmosphere of the project during editing.  It  is inspired by film noir’s made in that era. It alos is insipred by political ww2 thrillers like Lars Von Trier’s Europa or the italian expressionism movement of Roberto Rossellini in the 60’s.The main character of the project calls back to protagonists from the films of Jean Luc Godard or  Robert Altman, Billy Wilder,Nicolas Ray or Edgar G ulmer or even a Nicolas Winding Refn film. the characters in noir in what attracts me is the ay they way their mind works and how there neagative persona brings cool style despite their scruffyness we root for these people despite there flaws and i want to make a character with these points.  With This project I won’t shoot in black and white but in colour then change the color to black and white via editing.

The Genre :

My Final major project shall be a Film Noir. Because the visual style is one of the main reasons. The character it depicts, the voice narration usually found in noir is also a heavy reason. And the environment I like characters who believe they have an immense lack of caring. In Noir most protagonist are never really vulnerable people they show cynical emotions around everyone they stumble into and have not much of an eventful future ahead of them. Until they fall across a femme fatale with a past or a case concerning a woman and upon that point they slowly develop become more alive yet increasingly vulnerable and in the end of most plot’s of noir’s it doesn’t close happily ever after. So in a sense Noir is a form of a grim tragedy. And I want to make a character in that fashion.

The Form :

My Final major project entitled Waking at night shall be a video production. I want to make an opening sequence of a film that has never been made and make the audience be intrigued by the opening and make them want to watch the rest. Like watching a movie clip and want to watch the entire movie because you where interested.

What the Project would look like :

I want to make my project look as experimental as possible shot in colour and edited in Black and white with occasional intrusions of colour . By doing so I shall research the techniques through Avid by experimenting and adjusting the colours. I shall shoot in natural lighting with the canon 700D then change the look through editing.  I plan to make my project look like the quality of the images below.

The main character of the project will wear a leather jacket and jeans. I want to cool yet scruffy.

  • Music as a source of inspiration.

Music is a strong element use in Noir, in fact it is one of the characters as Noir uses on multiple occasions smooth jazz and in neo noir smooth rock and pop. I listened to 100 different songs for the right mood so I can pick up one that matches my project here are some of the songs that can be used and heard in the genre of Noir.

Sturgill Simpson. Brace Impact                                       Billy Ocean: When the going get’s tough

Portishead. Give me a reason to love you.                        Chris Isaak, Blue Hotel

Chet Baker . Almost Blue                                                        David Bowie. I’m Deranged

Allen Toussaint. Cast your fate                                           Miles David- I fall in Love too easy

Chris Isaak. Wicked Game                                                       The Smiths- How soon is now

Neneh Cherry. Woman                                                             Michael Been- Fate

Iggy Pop. Nightclubbing                                                           The Cure- A forest

Pulp- I spy                                                                 Serge Gainsbourg – Comme un Boomerang

Killer 7- Soundtrack 03 Blackburn                          John Barry- The Ipcress file

Space – Female of the species                                      Air- Playground Love

Flock of Seagulls- heart of steel                                            Edwyn Collins- A girl like you

Music adds a lot of rhythm and style to Noir. I will choose of these tracks to play in my final major project because in the story when the main character wakes up and get’s himself ready to leave, he plays some music. This adds a sense of cool amusement to the project that can slowly drag our audience into the movie by knowing the right pacing and execution. Thanks to the music and the dialogue.

There are several influences for my final major project including films made in the 40’s and 50s.  Here are some videos I researched to develop the idea of the story down below

player, v. (2016). The Vimeo Player. [online] Vimeo.com. Available at: https://vimeo.com/player [Accessed 23 Jun. 2016].

In the video up above from Robert Altman’s the Long Goodbye. The opening sequence provides a combination of warmth and a definition of yet another day  at work Mr Marlowe. What I want to prevail is a similar clip while this time with voice narration. It will also have a more dreamlike quality.

In the video up above from the opening sequence of Sin City 2005. The film is heavily based on Noir as it’s creator Frank Miller borrowed multiple elements of the genre and making a style of his own. The Colours in this video is what I would like to provide for mine. Because it’s visually stunning and because it doesn’t look like real life. It looks like a dreamy, sensual and even erotic fantasy which is why black and white is I believe more often better than using colour.

noir, A. (2016). [online] Available at: Andysnoir2015Fim Noir Quotes:. Available at:http://andysnoir.blogspot.co.uk/ (13/05/2016) [Accessed 23 Jun. 2016].

Comic and Noir are also a strong influence for my project because of the dialogue, setting and characters. It has a gritty charm, a sensual romantic allure, and the art of the drawings is meticulously crafted and edited. while the narration is thrilling and also quite often funny because of it’s black sense of humour.

Reflective writing on task 1

I enjoyed explaining my characters in my project

  • Task 2

How I shall shoot my final project.

I will use a canon 700D that I will hire from the media department from Canterbury College.

The Canon 700D is a very capable and versatile camera that produces high quality images. It has a comprehensive feature set and affords all the control expected by enthusiast photographers while providing automatic hand-holding options for less experienced users. ( These words have been Harvard referenced down below).

I will also use a tripod that I shall hire from Canterbury College. The tripods that Canterbury college behold are called manfrotto.

As for the sound I shall use a boom pole entitles rode boom and Zoom H1 voice recorder. I shall hire this from the Canterbury College.
UK, A. (2016). Amazon.co.uk: microphone rode Re: Electronics & Photo. [online] Amazon.co.uk. Available at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=microphone+rode+Re [Accessed 23 Jun. 2016].
The ultra-compact H1 Handy Recorder brings new meaning to the term “portability.” Small enough to slip in your pocket, it offers professional-quality stereo recording at an incredibly affordable price. Take it with you wherever you go—live concerts and band rehearsals, location video shoots, lectures and meetings—or use it to capture your musical ideas whenever inspiration strikes.
The RØDE Mini-Boompole is a lightweight, high grade professional boom pole. The Mini-Boompole allows you to mount your microphone securely and swivel it in a range of directions that will allow you to easily change positions and follow your sound source. Extends from 0.84m (33″) to 2.05m (81″).

–    The skills I shall use to make this project

I will focus on sound detail when shooting this project for example I plan to zoom in on small little details. As this clip is set in one room in a small location so I will shoot in a wide angle,I will take multiple close ups on Like when the main character walks into the bathroom or when he lights a cigarette and pours himself a glass of whiskey. So I will use the H1 handy recorder to catch the sounds of pouring and any action the main character does. When my character plays music slowly does the sound audio but I want to capture certain other sounds while the music is playing, because of that we won’t hear as much but then the character stops the music and picks up his keys then leaves the room, I want to capture the sounds of the keys being picked up or the door being shut. When the main character even washes his face in the bathroom I the sounds of water splashed upon his face or when gets out of bed and when the telephone rings.. I shall take a close up shot of telephone ringing and the character opening his eye to wake up And when we have an extensive shot of the room, in the editing process I will transform the room into black and white and the window painted in red because with window lighting you can see the reflection of a light outside , in neo noir a lot of the time windows tend to be red due to neon signs, so I want the window to be coloured red because it also symbolises the location of the character as beautiful hell, like Nicolas Winding Refn used in Only god forgives . These are the skills I shall experiment on.

Reflective Writing on task 2

I found task 2 to be necessary in understanding and explaining how the skills and tools I will need and shall be incredibly usefull.

–    Task 3

– Target audience
This Project will be targeted to an audience who love, Thrillers, Film noir of course and crime, criminal gangster films and even romances. It is also aimed at an older audience since noir was a type of film that was infamous back in the golden age of Hollywood. But my project is a neo noir since it made today so those who really liked films like Drive or Chinatown, Serpico, Animal Kingdom and those who read comic book for a mature audience will like this clip. I am not aiming for an audience who are more comfortable into contemporary cinema and major blockbusters.
The types of people who I am making this product for are for adults, and cultivated cinephiles  and youths who love art.
I am also making this product for people who like films made in the 80’s and people who like music of the 90s,70’s and 80’s. Age wise 35 years and onward.
Archetype example to attract to the audience I am aiming at.
The First five minutes of a shambolic Private Detective named Max Heat who has nothing much to lose, he sleeps by day and works by night. One of these nights he is told by a mysterious phone call to investigate the mysterious murder of a Jazz club owner
– Reflective writing on task 3
Just like task 2 , I found this task important to talk about my target audience.

Reflective writing on task 4
Task 4 was a struggle in completing due to understanding the tools and techniques. unlike the other tasks, this one took me a long time to complete. as I was trying to understand what the questions in task 4 mean.

– Task 5

What is the most important thing when working with clients ?

  • a ) Listen
  • b ) Produce
  • c ) Professional

.Listening is the most important part of working with clients because making a film with a group is highly important to provide what the director of the film needs. You need to listen to another and have just have fun while knowing what you want while making a film.

What skills do you need to work with clients Technical Communication

  • a) Technical
  • b) Communication
  • c) Time manage
  • d) Diplomatic

The answer is b because communication helps everything like time management and diplomacy. It would be more difficult to work on time management and other factors if the communication isn’t clicking.

What type of clients do you think would commission you to produce the product you have chosen to produce for your fmp. ?

Independent film companies. Because Noir isn’t exactly a genre found in huge compnies like Warner Bros or Universal. The clients who own independant companies would like to see more less mainstream films and film noir shot in black and white comes to no exception. Other clients would be foreign film companies because they have more of an open film culture in comparision to bigger film companies.

The title of my final major project shall be called Waking at Night.

1.1 Understanding Requirements
